X² is an Arrow Dynamics 4th Dimension roller coaster located at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California.[1] The ride first opened to the public in 2002 as "X". In 2007, the ride was closed for upgrades and renamed "X²". The ride has a design in which the seats can rotate forward or backward 360° in a controlled spin. X² cost 46 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive roller coasters on the planet.
Mechanics[]
The rotation of the cars is achieved by having four rails on the track: two of these are running rails while the other two are for spin control. The two rails that control the spin of the seats move up and down relative to the track and spin the seats using a rack and pinion gear mechanism.
History[]
2002 - 2007[]
The ride opened in 2002 as "X". It was the first 4th Dimension roller coaster in the world. "X" was pink and yellow instead of red and grey.
Modifications[]
On November 1, 2007, it was announced that "X" would be re-modeled to become "X²". The ride was re-painted red and gray, similar to the colors of Eejanaika, another 4th Dimension roller coaster. An on-ride soundtrack and fire effects were added as a result, and new trains from S&S Sansei were installed. The ride opened on May 24, 2008.
