The Scenic Railway is the UK's oldest surviving roller coaster, the only one in the UK to have been installed in its park since the park's opening, and one of only eight surviving "Scenic Railway" models in the world.[1] It was also the first roller coaster to receive protection from demolition.
The rebuilt ride was supposed to reopen in June 2015, but health and safety considerations following the Smiler incident two weeks prior to the scheduled opening and the structure collapsing during high winds in 2014[citation needed] caused the opening to be delayed until 16 October.[2] The ride is still operated by a brakeman who rides on the middle of the train, but there is now an additional braking system which automatically cuts in should the brakeman lose control.
