Montezooma's Revenge was a Schwarzkopf launched sit-down shuttle roller coaster located at Knott's Berry Farm, in Buena Park, California.

History[]

The coaster was designed by Anton Schwarzkopf opened at the park on May 21, 1978. It became the oldest operating roller coaster at Knott's Berry Farm with the removal of Corkscrew in 1989.[1] It was one of two Schwarzkof shuttle loopers still remaining in the United States, with the other being the former Cascabel coaster from La Feria Chapultepec Magico, which is set to reopen in Indiana Beach in the future after being stored at Niagara Amusement Park & Splash World.

Refurbishment[]

The coaster was closed for major refurbishment during the 2022 season and was set to reopen under the name MonteZOOMa: The Forbidden Fortress. The 7.6-ton flywheel launch mechanism was removed in July 2022 to be replaced with a more reliable magnetic mechanism.[2] Parts of the original loop, the original trains, and signage were donated to the National Roller Coaster Museum and Archives.[3]

The coaster was originally planned to reopen in 2023 with the overall revamping of the Mexican-themed Fiesta Village area at Knott's Berry Farm, but Montezooma's reopening was delayed due to construction.[4] The refurbished ride is set to reopen sometime in 2025, though little of the original track appears to remain from the supposed retracking work.[5][6]
