Colossus is an Intamin AG sit-down roller coaster located at Thorpe Park in Surrey, England, United Kingdom. Colossus was the world's first roller coaster to include ten inversions; an exact replica, called 10 Inversion Roller Coaster, was later built at Chimelong Paradise in Guangzhou, China. Upon the opening of Smiler in 2013, Colossus' inversions record was surpassed.

Name[]

During planning and construction Colossus was known as Project Odyssey; both names allude to Ancient Greece, but in different ways.

Ride Experience[]

The ride starts with a 30 m (98 ft) tall lift hill before a banked 180 degree turn into the drop followed by a vertical loop. After the loop the train passes over a small air-time hill and under the pathways above, into the cobra roll. After this the ride passes through two consecutive corkscrews, going under and over the walkways, before another banked 180 degree turn. The ride then goes through four consecutive barrel rolls followed by a final turn and barrel roll into the brake run.

In total Colossus features 10 inversions:

  • Vertical Loop (1)
  • Cobra Roll (2)
  • Double Corkscrew (2)
  • Quadruple Barrel Roll (4)
  • Barrel Roll (1)
