The Big Apple Coaster, formerly known as The Roller Coaster and Manhattan Express, is a steel roller coaster located at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is accessible through The Big Apple Arcade. Although its overall height is 203 feet, its main drop is 143 feet, and its lift hill is 180 feet. It is also the last operating coaster from TOGO left in the United States.

History[]

The coaster was manufactured by TOGO and originally opened on January 3, 1997 as Manhattan Express. The ride was accessed through the arcade, which was called the "Coney Island Emporium" at the time. Its trains are themed as New York City taxicabs.[1]

The ride was infamous for having a rough ride and was unpopular among coaster enthusiasts. Part of the criticism was due to the original trains having a lap bar and poor-fitting over-the-shoulder restraints, causing obvious discomfort among riders. As TOGO had gone bankrupt at the time, Premier Rides was contracted to manufacture replacement trains in 2006 to address the poor ride experience. Once installed, the ride was renamed to The Roller Coaster at New York-New York in January 2007.[2]

In 2013, the roller coaster and arcade were renamed to "The Big Apple Coaster & Arcade", though a sign still referring to the coaster as the "Manhattan Express" remained visible in the casino.[3][4]

In 2018, it cost $15 for a single ride with a reride costing $8. A virtual reality option was available for an additional $5. The VR experience of a scientist chasing an alien were supplied by Samsung devices, which received negative feedback.[5]

The train was replaced yet again in February 2021 by a Sky Rocket II-style version, also from Premier Rides. Social media feedback noted the improved smoothness of the ride.[6] Single rides were $19 at the time, with all day passes available for $35.[7] Since the summer of 2023, the coaster cost $25 for a single ride, and $10 for a reride.[8]
